C. Basic design criteria for BHs.
1. Introduction:
- Birdhouse design is not very complicated if you know the basic requirement plus what those birds likes and dislikes.
- You can build a very huge, tall as KLCC and expansive but you can also get something which we call it the optimum design.
- This presentation is to give you some basics ideas and design criteria that will help you to do the right thing.
2. The right environment!
- When you design a BH your main abjective is to provide the right environment for them to enter, stay as your permanent tenants, build a nest and lay two eggs.
- The moment the female bird laid her first egg you will be rest assured that the couple will be your tenant until the end of their life.
- Remember you need to give them the right environment so that they will decide to be your "Until I Die" tenant.
3. Minimum size to fly in a circle:
- In a restricted areas swiftlet will fly in a circle. They do not fly on a reverse gear.
- In general 60% will fly in the anticlockwise and 40% in the clockwise direction.
- The minimum room size recommended is 4 meters by 4 meters or 12,5 feet by 12,5 feet.
- Remember this is the minimum size for them to fly in a circular motion while chasing each other during their mating season.
4. How many 4 meters squares?
Now you need to list what will be the types of rooms do you require in a BH?
Types of rooms:
The optimum size will be one each

5. The entrance hole(s):
- You may want to use the open roof type or a monkey/ dog kennel type.
- All you need to do is to erect a simple dog kennel about 6 feet high with four windows. Each wall of the dog kennel will have a window.
- Window must be property located and about 3 feet wide by 4 feet high.
- You might want to open one of it or two or all.
- The best is to open two. One facing the birds flying path and the other towards the morning sun.
6. The roving areas:
- Main function of roving area is to allow the birds to feel secered before flying inside.
- However roving room is normally used to block those bright light from polluting the VIP room.
- The roving room must be properly done to allow those birds to fly in a smooth flow and yet block 80% of those bright light coming into the Main Hall.
- The door size must be not too big or too small.
7. The Main Hall:
- Function of this hall is like a place for those birds to play you chasing me.
- This hall will be the least populated during the initial stage however once the VIP room is totally populated new comer have to build their nests in the hall.
- The hall can be larger but not less than 4 meters x 4 meters.
8. The VIP rooms:
- VIP room is a must in every BH.
- It gives the sense of comfort anf safe.
- It will be the darknest room in the house. Normally located at the far end of the floor.
- You need at least one VIP room on the upper floor and another room on the ground floor.
- Choose the walls at the far end of the building away from the entrance hole.
- Not lesser then 4 meters but not bigger then 4,5meters.
- The width should be the length of the end walls.
9. The height of the BH ceiling!!!
- The design criteria for the height of BH should be 7 feet minimum from the tongue of the nesting plank to the floor.
- Total minimum high is 7.5 feet.
- Main reason is to allow enough high for those young birds to drop when taking their first flight.
- During bad season (worst case scenario), not enought food, they need longer time to fly after releasing their grip on their nest.
10. Nesting planks selection:
- How do you select the right materials for your nesting planks?
- Width have something to do with the temperature in the area.
- Must be medium hard, 1 inch thick, about 6 inches in width.
- Arrange to face the flying path of those birds flying into the house or room.
- Create boxes of about 3 feet by 1.5 feet.
- This will create more nesting areas and additional 90o crossings.
11. Room temperature and humidity:
BH room temperature and humidity will make the bird stays.
They will find a new home if the above are not within the required range.
All in all these range will safe guard their babies and eggs.
